Do You Need a 4x4 in Georgia?

The short answer

Every place in our attractions database carries two fields we fill in ourselves: a road-surface class and the minimum car class that surface demands. On 30 August 2026 we counted all 267 of them.

227 places - 85.0% - sit at the end of paved or mostly paved roads. 181 of them (67.8%) are rated for an ordinary economy car with no qualification at all. The number of places where a genuine off-road vehicle is not optional is 17.

So the honest answer to "do I need a 4x4 in Georgia?" is: almost certainly not - unless your list contains one of about forty specific places. We can name all forty, and that is what the rest of this page does.

The four road classes, counted

Read the middle row carefully, because it is where most of the confusion lives. mostly_paved is not a warning. Of those 73 places, 31 are rated economy and 42 are rated SUV - and the SUV rating is usually about a steep approach, altitude or a rough last kilometre, not about the surface being broken.

The category is a consequence of the surface, not an opinion

Four road classes and three car classes give twelve possible pairings. Only seven of them occur in the data:

Two things fall straight out of that table. Every single 4x4_only place is rated offroad, with no exceptions - the two flags never disagree across 267 records. And no gravel road is ever rated economy: the moment the asphalt stops, the minimum goes up.

The four paved roads we still rate SUV are the interesting exception, and they prove the rule: Gudauri at 2,200 m, Bakuriani at 1,700 m and Mestia at 1,500 m with its museum. The asphalt is fine. The altitude and the winter are the reason.

Where the difficult forty actually are

Ten of our eleven regions contain at least one gravel or 4x4-only place. One does not.

All 28 places we map inside Tbilisi are paved except one. If your trip is the capital plus day trips, the 4x4 question does not arise at all.

Four real trips, four different answers

Svaneti. The road to Mestia is paved for all 470 km and 8h30 of it. You can drive it in a normal car. It is the next 45 km that changes everything: Ushguli is gravel, rated offroad, 515 km and 10h30 from Tbilisi, and best between June and September. Same valley, two completely different bookings. Our Svaneti expedition route is planned around the harder half.

Kazbegi. Gergeti Trinity Church sits at 2,170 m and is mostly_paved, rated SUV, 160 km and 3h10 from Tbilisi. No 4x4 needed. The side valleys are a different story: Truso is gravel/offroad and Juta and the Chaukhi massif is 4x4_only, both June to September only. The Georgian Military Highway route is rated SUV for exactly this reason.

Kakheti. The entire wine country is paved and economy-rated - Sighnaghi, Telavi, Tsinandali, Alaverdi, Kvareli. Our Kakheti wine loop is 420 km, rated economy, and in season all year. Anybody who sells you a 4x4 for Kakheti is selling you a 4x4.

Tusheti. This is the one where the answer is an unqualified yes. The Abano Pass is 4x4_only, 2,850 m, the highest point in our dataset, in season June to September, and it is the only way in to Omalo and Tusheti. See our Tusheti highland route before you commit to it.

Ground clearance, in millimetres

The gap between an SUV at 195 mm and an off-road car at 235 mm is 40 mm. On a paved road that is nothing. On the Abano Pass it is the whole argument.

What this page does not tell you

This is a classification, not a live road report. We publish the typical surface and the typical season for each place. We do not publish today's condition, and nothing here should be read as a claim that a road is open, closed, safe or passable right now. Rockslides, fresh snow and administrative closures are outside this dataset - 52 of the 267 places are flagged as not open all year, and those are the ones to check locally before you set off.

Off-road driving also interacts with what your rental agreement actually covers. Read the rental terms and the FAQ rather than assuming, particularly for the 4x4_only routes.

So which category should you book?

• Cities, wine country, the Black Sea coast, the main highways - an economy car covers 181 of the 267 places we map.
• Mountain villages, national parks, a rough last kilometre, shoulder season - an SUV covers those plus another 63.
• Ushguli, Tusheti, the Abano Pass, Shatili, the Svan high lakes - book the off-road 4x4. There is no clever workaround for these 23 places.
