Stepantsminda (Kazbegi)

The mountain town at the foot of Mount Kazbek — base camp for the whole Kazbegi area and home to Georgia's most famous view.

Stepantsminda is where the Caucasus finally towers directly over you. The town sits at 1,740 m on the last stretch of the Georgian Military Highway, and on a clear morning you can drink coffee on the main square while staring straight up at the 5,054 m white cone of Mount Kazbek, with Gergeti Trinity Church perched in the foreground.

The name comes from Stepan, a monk who built a hermitage here in the 18th century. In 1925 the Soviets renamed the town Kazbegi after the writer Alexander Kazbegi, who was born here; the historic name only returned in 2006, and locals still use both interchangeably.

The town is the base for everything in Khevi:

  • The Gergeti Trinity view — the church stands on a bluff right above town, now reached by asphalt road
  • The Alexander Kazbegi Museum, the writer's house with the family graves
  • Cafe and hotel terraces aimed squarely at the mountain
  • Jumping-off point for Juta, Truso and the Dariali gorge

Summer brings crowds and full guesthouses; winter leaves the town snowy and nearly empty, though the view works just as hard in both. The peak shows itself most reliably at dawn — by midday a cloud cap usually forms over the summit.

Practical advice

Book guesthouses well ahead for July and August; last-minute options are thin and overpriced. For the Kazbek view, get up early — the sky is clearest before nine. ATMs, a pharmacy and proper supermarkets cluster near the square, so stock up here before heading into the valleys. Taxi drivers quote fixed prices to Gergeti; bargain politely. Weather flips fast at 1,740 m, so pack a warm layer even in August.

How to get there from Tbilisi

Take the Georgian Military Highway (E117) north from Tbilisi: Mtskheta, Ananuri, Pasanauri, Gudauri, over the Jvari Pass at 2,395 m and down to Stepantsminda — 157 km, about three hours on a clear road. The asphalt is good the whole way, but truck convoys heading for the Larsi border crossing slow things down. Refuel in Pasanauri or Gudauri. An economy car is fine in summer; in winter the pass demands chains or a higher-clearance vehicle and closes temporarily after heavy snowfall.
